Up and coming three-year-old Spitfire Ace bounced back to the winners list at Belmont on Saturday in the Westspeed 3YO Handicap over 1400m.
The Darren Mc Auliffe trained gelding was forced to drop back to 1200m after he won a 1600m event on April 18, but the gelding suffered a set back, missed some work and was dropped down in distance.
On Saturday stepping up to the 1400m journey, punters thought the son of Bletchley Park was capable of bouncing back, installing the three-year-old as a $2.60 favourite.
It was a clever rider for Shaun O’Donnell, settling Spitfire Ace outside the leader in a race that had no speed on paper what so ever.
After O’Donnell was able to control the speed outside the leader he was always going to prove hard to run down in the home straight.
It was the third career win for Spitfire Ace, but he is sure to win more races as the distances increase in the future.
Runner up, Fun Spice hit the line well for Lucas Camilleri, but with the slow speed on throughout the race he was always going to struggle to reel in Spitfire Ace.
Both Kingsley Blue and Coppaclip Inn battled hard in the home running, but like Fun Spice struggled to make ground, finishing third and fourth respectively.
What they said – “I thought he would be hard to beat today. His work has been first class this week. He seemed to stargaze last start over the shorter distance, but he was back to his best today. He will only get better as the distances increase down the track.” Winning trainer Darren Mc Auliffe said following the win.
Results: Numbers: 1-2-3-4-7 Time: 1.24.16 (34.66) Margins: 1 x ¾ x Long Neck
Winners Breeding: Bletchley Park – Air Pocket (Key Business)

The Impressive Racing team celebrated there first Saturday double when 3yo’s Spitfire Ace and Dominicano both saluted at Ascot earning $32,500 plus a Westspeed bonus of $20,000 each. Both were partnered by jockey Shaun O’Donnell who rode two outstandingly good tactical races.
Spitfire Ace, a last start winner, stepped up to 1600m but met a small field with just 3 opponents in the Amelia Park Lamb 3yo Handicap. In a farcically slow run race, O’Donnell took Spitfire Ace to the flanks of the main danger in Just Marika before easily out sprinting the mare in the run home. The final 600m for the race was covered in a very fast 33.12 and this son of Bletchley Park certainly has a very quick turn of foot which is the hallmark of a nice horse. He will continue to race in similar events and no doubt be very hard to beat.
Dominicano also stepped up in trip over 2400m in the Amelia Park Beef Stayers’ Handicap. He was particularly badly weighted, being forced to race older horses at level weights due to a handicapping anomaly when the higher rater horses failed to accept for the race. Nonetheless he took up a forward position in running before a race winning move was made at the half mile by O’Donnell as he let the son of Blackfriars assume the front. Kicking off the home turn he put a good length or more on his rivals who despite closing over the late stages couldn’t catch him. This horse is still a touch immature both physically and mentally and once again over raced although not as badly as he did in the Derby. There is no doubt he will continue to improve in subsequent preparations but for the time being he can continue to earn prize money over the middle to staying distances. |
